Arch Coal to scale back production at Black Thunder
Gillette, WY. — Following the release of it’s first quarter financial reports Arch Coal has announced that it plans to scale back production at it’s northeast Wyoming, Black Thunder mine, citing flat sales and a weak market.
Initial plans call for a nearly 10 million ton reduction in coal production for this year. If followed through, the plan would put production at Black Thunder close to it’s production levels during the 2016 coal-industry downturn.
It isn’t clear if the decreased production will lead to layoffs at this time, and the issue was not addressed by Arch Coal.
