Cloud Peak Energy Hires 60 Laid Off Miners from Blackjewel

GILLETTE, WY. (AP) — Wyoming-based Cloud Peak Energy says it has hired some of the miners put out of work by Blackjewel’s bankruptcy proceedings.

Cloud Peak said Friday that it has hired around 60 Blackjewel workers who will start work Tuesday at its Cordero Rojo and Antelope mines in northeastern Wyoming.

In the company’s announcement, Cloud Peak Energy’s Amy Clemetson said the company contacted Wyoming Workforce Services after hearing of the sudden layoffs at Blackjewel earlier this month. She says it worked as quickly as possible to hire the miners because of the impact the layoffs had on the Gillette community.

Cloud Peak filed for bankruptcy itself in May but its Wyoming mines and its Spring Creek mine in Montana have remained open.
