Longhorns Go 3-1 in Weekend Tournament Play
The Newcastle Sr Babe Ruth tournament was held this weekend with six teams competing over the course of two days. On day one the Longhorns bested the Casper Badgers 17 to 1, behind the pitching of Cameron Quigley. Newcastle won game two of pool play over the Big Horn Basin Blue Jays 19 to 2 with Lyle Whitney pitching the complete game.
The second day of elimination play saw the Newcastle team in an extra inning affair with the Belle Fourche Bombers. The game was tied on three separate occasions with pitching from Cameron Williams and then Jake Lacy in relief. Newcastle prevailed after 10 innings on a walk off sacrifice fly by Ryan Oliver to win 8 to 7. Then in the championship game the Longhorns fell to the Gillette team 12 to 8 in a game that was tied twice but where Gillette never trailed. Pitcher Sawyer Roberson gave way to Ryan Oliver in the loss that witnessed several uncharacteristic fielding errors by Newcastle.
The Longhorns will take their 24 win 4 loss record next to Buffalo for a tournament on the 9th and 10th. Catch all Longhorn baseball action on AM1240 KASL and streaming live online at mylocalradio.com/listen!
