Longhorns remain undefeated after double header with Campbell County Gillette
Newcastle, WY. | Jay Whitney – The Newcastle Longhorns remain undefeated after a double header against the Campbell County Gillette team on Wednesday night. The first game was a lop-sided event as the Gillette pitching struggled to find the strike zone. When they did pitch strikes the Longhorns offense was too much for the Gillette team. Conversely the Longhorn pitchers backed up with strong fielding kept the purple clad Gillette team in check. The end result was a 1 to 16 mercy rule drubbing, the game was called after four innings.
The second game proved to be a different matter, with Gillette using more seasoned pitchers. The Newcastle team was able to jump out to an early lead but after 3 innings Gillette had managed to tie the game at 4 apiece. In the fifth inning the Longhorns again took what appeared to be a commanding lead at 4 to 8, only to see a late game rally from the Gillette
team. In the final inning Gillette managed to score six runs to take a 10 to 8 lead. In the end though, Newcastle’s offensive play was simply just too much. In the bottom of the last inning the first three veteran players up, Issac Prell, Lyle Whitney and Ryan Oliver all got on base, and scored two runs on aggressive base running to tie the game at 10 each. Gillette purposely loaded the bases to try to generate some easy outs, but the strategy backfired as veteran player Cam Quigley hit a walk off single to clinch the 10 to 11 victory.
Belle Fourche will travel to Newcastle on Monday, May 7th for a double header, the first game at will be played at 5 p.m. and the second is scheduled for 7 p.m.
