DCI to investigate officer involved shooting in Box Elder, SD

Box Elder, SD. – The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the Box Elder Police Department, is investigating the officer involved shooting. The shooting occurred Wednesday, May 2, at approximately 1:30 a.m. at 240 North Ellsworth Road, Lot 13, in Box Elder.

Box Elder Police were responding to a call for service at that location. The situation escalated resulting in an Officer firing his duty weapon at the subject.

The 44 year-old male subject died at the scene. Additional information will be released once next of kin notifications can be made. The name of the officer involved has not been released at the time.

At the completion of the investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General for a final determination on the officer’s action. The release of the summary is anticipated within 30 days.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and Meade County Sheriff’s Office are assisting in this investigation.
